While you might think of personal development as something that happens more in the mind, your overall health and fitness can actually play a key role in it as well. Not only does your level of health influence the way you look, it can also have a big impact on the way you feel. These are both things that can affect your personal effectiveness and enhance or disrupt your ability to achieve your goals.
There are three major ways that your state of health can affect your personal development. These are your self-esteem, the way others view you and your attitude and overall mood.
Self Esteem
Let's face it, for most people the way you look greatly affects your self-esteem. If you do not have a good health and fitness plan in the works, then you may not be looking your best. If you're overweight and flabby your self-esteem could be low. People with low self-esteem usually do not have a good degree of personal effectiveness and might not have the positive attitude necessary for good personal development.
The Way Others View You
Unfortunate as it may be, people tend to view others who are healthy and in shape with a more positive frame of mind. People that are healthy often have a vibrancy to them and they tend to exude confidence and positive vibes. This means that others usually look at them as being successful. When other people view you as successful and in a positive light, it's easier to get them to work with you in order to achieve your goals.
Your Outlook And Mood
If you are fit and healthy, then you probably have an abundance of energy along with a positive outlook. It's likely that you're always in a good mood. These things can greatly enhance your ability to be successful. If you are unhealthy, this can zap energy leaving you less time to fulfill your goals. The food you eat can also affect your mood and if you are not eating right and you may not be in the right frame of mind for success.
Including a health and fitness component to your personal development plan doesn't mean you have to spend hours in the gym will revert to eating only salads. You can make a few changes in your current lifestyle and gain quite a bit of health. The first thing you want to do is evaluate what you're eating. Try to make sure the majority of the foods you eat our fresh fruits and vegetables along with whole grains. Instead of eating beef every day why not switch to fish every other day? You might be surprised at the lift you get from changing your eating habits a little bit.
Exercise is an important part of a health and fitness regime but you don't need to overdo it. Try to get in a half hour walk every other day. You can do this in little increments like parking further away from where you're going and taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work. This way you can work in some exercise without actually having to make the time to do it. Once you get this under your belt, you might try taking exercise class or adding some free weights to your routine.
