I'm not crazy about words like success or achievement, even though they are powerful words, they mean different things to different people.
Depending on your beliefs and your background, these words may have more negativity associated with them that positive meaning.
What is universal though is that we, as humans always want to strive to be or get better in one or more areas of our lives.
The challenge that consumes so much of our mind, our energy and our time is how we can get from where you are today to where you want to be in terms of one or more of these areas.
Based on working with thousands of others and having studied many top achievers in different areas of life, here are 5 of the most powerful tips for getting more of what you want.
1. Go Get It
Ambition is a trait held by high achievers whether they be stepping up to change from being depressed to happy or they start their own business in response to the ambition to change their life. If you are not getting what you want today then chances are you have beliefs around how other people actually get what they want. Ask yourself, do you believe that people are successful were "lucky" in some way, or that success "found them" rather than the fact that they went out with wild, unstoppable ambition and set the stage for their level of achievement. The other common mistaken belief is that you deserve to have good things happen to you, even if you do nothing to make that happen. Change your thoughts from waiting for what you want to going out TODAY and getting it.
In order to stay motivated and to grow your ambition, each high achiever can trace their ability to get what they want back to a BIG purpose or reason. For some, that is the pain associated with being controlled by others reinforced by their desire to control their own destiny, energy and creativity. For others, the purpose is to build up safety and a big future for their family or the desire to help friends or a group in society.
One of the most obvious qualities that differentiate people who tend to get what they want from those who are discouraged, have given up or end up bitter is their voracious appetite to learn fuelled by incredible curiousness. Being in a curious state means you are engaged, you are open and want to learn, you seek out knowledge and that you embrace the notion that achievement is always brought about by a complex combination of understandings, learnings and actions
4. Discipline Leads To Freedom
Those who are not reaching their desired goals often have the belief that freedom means they don't have to do anything more…when in fact it is the opposite. The more discipline you practice, the more freedom that is possible. A simple example, if you looked at the freedom to eat anything you wanted as a reason to eat unhealthy foods your life expectancy and quality will drop dramatically limiting your freedom. If you practice discipline with your eating habits, you enjoy a higher quality of life and tend to live longer which provides you with the basis for much more freedom in your life
5. Prioritize What Is Essential First
Those that get what they want know how to prioritize their lives to focus on getting what they want. Sounds simple doesn't it? Yet day-in and day-out what tends to consume our time and energy is every EXCEPT what we should be prioritizing to get what we want. Assuming you have a clear vision for what want (because that's where it all starts), you MUST apply the discipline we talked about earlier to making sure you do what is essential to getting what you want FIRST. The more consistent you can get with your prioritization, the more successful you will be getting what you want.
Getting what you want in life can be learned. Just like we learn to walk, talk and make a living, you can learn the skills required to get more of what you want in life. Start with the 5 listed here – they will get you far on the journey toward getting more of what you want in your life.
